A man described in court as a 'bully' has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today on a series of assault charges.

Trevor Kelly (37) of no fixed abode admitted three assaults, an assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of criminal damage and a charge of threatening to damage property that occurred on January 10 this year.

The court heard that police were called to a report of a man having been assaulted in his own flat.

The injured party told police he had earlier seen Kelly banging on the door of another flat in the complex.

Shortly after 7.30pm the defendant kicked down the door of the injured party's flat and punched him resulting in a bloody nose.

Police then received a report from a woman who said that Kelly had been banging on her door and had damaged the hinges.

She said earlier in the day herself and another female had been along with Kelly and he had assaulted both of them.

The other woman also said Kelly had assaulted her.

The defendant was arrested and when interviewed made no comment.

Defence counsel Fergal McCormack said that it was 'a very unpleasant matter'.

He said his client had not sought to waste anyone's time and had pleaded guilty at an early opportunity.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that the case had clearly crossed the custody threshold.

He said Kelly was a bully and his 'behaviour was a disgrace' and the judge said he 'struggled to find a single redeeming feature'.

Judge McElholm jailed Kelly for five months in prison and imposed a restraining order for each of the injured party's for a period of four years.

Kelly was also ordered to pay each of the three victims compensation of £250.
