A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrates Court after assaulting police.

Terrance Halvey (45) of no fixed abode, was charged after police were called to a man sleeping in the Guildhall Square in Derry on the morning of June 13.

Police tried to wake Halvey and found him uncooperative.

After refusing to provide his details, Halvey clenched his fist and swung as the officer before kicking him in the face but causing no injury.

The court heard that Halvey, not a native of the city, had been planning on staying with a friend but had ended up drunk and sleeping in the Guildhall Square.

Defence Barrister Damien Halleron said that Halvey had apologised to the officer and added that he did not have a record of such offences previously.

He was sentenced to three months in custody.
