A man has been sentenced to four months in prison in Derry Magistrates Court today after he stole a wallet that had a tracking device on it.

Trevor Kelly, 37, of Clooney Road in Derry admitted handling stolen goods and assault.

The court heard that on on June 9 a man reported that his wallet containing money, bankcard and Derry City season tickets had been stolen.

He told police he had a tracking device on the wallet and met police who were able to track the item.

Kelly was stopped and had the wallet in his pocket but with some of the money and other items missing.

When asked by police, Kelly initially claimed that the wallet was his, later telling police that he was planning on handing it in.

Kelly was also charged with an assault that took part in John Street on August 28 this year.

The assault was captured on CCTV and Kelly admitted to it when questioned.

A defence solicitor said his client had made full admissions at the outset and asked for credit.

He was sentenced to four months in custody and ordered him to pay £200 in compensation.
