A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with assaulting his former partner and possessing drugs.

Jamie McCarron (29) of Slievemore Park in Derry appeared charged with assaulting a female and possessing cannabis and Pregabalin on September 2.

The court heard that police received a call from 'a distressed child' stating that someone was trying to kill themselves.

Police attended and a female told them that McCarron had been at her address and she was talking to another person.

She said a child had one down and said someone was trying to hang themselves in front of the bedroom window.

The court heard that the people went on and discovered that McCarron was 'faking it' and an altercation ensued.

The woman claimed she tried to hold McCarron back and he had struck her on the nose with his head.

A garden hose was found tied in the property.

McCarron was arrested later and denied any suicide attempt and claimed the other man was the aggressor.

The court heard that police were opposed to bail as McCarron had 30 previous convictions and had only recently been released by the High Court.

A police officer said that the defendant had breached several conditions including contacting the alleged victim in the case and breaching his curfew.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that there was no address and applied for bail to an address approved by the PSNI.

He said his client would accept the drug offences but was denying the assault.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said that considering the fact that McCarron had only been released on bail by the High Court she had no confidence he would abide by conditions.

McCarron was remanded in custody to appear again on September 28.
