Man rescued after climbing over railings at Craigavon Bridge

A man has been helped to safety after climbing over the railings at the Craigavon Bridge.

The incident unfolded shortly after 3pm today.

The man was seen climbing over the railing at the Craigavon Bridge (pictured above) and the PSNI and the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) both arrived at the scene a short time later.

A crew from Foyle Search and Rescue were also tasked to the scene, which saw two boats patrol the water and a land team arrive on the bridge.

Volunteers from the rescue charity spoke to the man and managed to get him back over the railings to safety.

Craig Smyth of Foyle Search and Rescue said that the man was then taken to Altnagelvin Hospital.

A spokesperson for the PSNI also confirmed they attended the scene after reports of man being on the wrong side of the railings.

Speaking to the Derry News, Mr Smyth said he was happy that they were able to get the man to safety.

"We had two teams on the boats and a land team on the bridge and they managed to get him back over the railings after talking to him," he said.
