Man who beat and robbed 'vulnerable' adult jailed in two courts in one day

A Derry man has been jailed for a series of offences at different courts on the same day.

Jason Curry was sentenced in Derry Crown Court to three years in prison for a ‘gratuitous’ attack on a ‘vulnerable’ man.

He was also sentenced to six months for other offences at Derry Magistrates Court on the same day.

Curry, 35, of Winchester Park, was jailed for three years for robbery and grievous bodily harm and will spend a further three years on licence.

The offences took place on July 14, 2012 when Curry and his co-accused, David Greene, 27, of Paisley, Scotland, kicked and punched a 50 year-old vulnerable man in what was described by presiding Crown Judge Phillip Babington as an ‘appalling’ attack.

Curry and his co-accused also robbed the man of an MP3 player and a mobile phone.

Around an hour after being sentenced in Crown Court, Curry then appeared in Magistrates Court where he was jailed for a further six months for theft, two counts of criminal damage, disorderly behaviour and obstructing police. The offences took place on September 17 and December 9, 2013.

Curry will serve the six month sentence for these offences consecutively with the three year sentence for grievous bodily harm and robbery.
