McGuinness optimistic of resolution to ‘outstanding issues’ in dealing with legacy of the past
Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness has said he is “optimistic” a resolution can be found to the “outstanding issues” in dealing with the legacy of the past.
The Deputy First Minister (pictured), who is standing for election in the Foyle constituency in the May’s Assembly elections, was speaking after meeting the Victims Commissioner today.
He said British government had a responsibility to be part of the process of resolving the “problem of the legacy of the past.”
He added: ““I am optimistic a resolution can be found to the outstanding issues in dealing with the legacy of the past.
“I have met with the British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers several times since the Fresh Start Agreement.
“I have raised the issue of the British government using a bogus ‘National Security’ veto to prevent maximum disclosure to the families of victims of the conflict.
“There is a real opportunity to find a way forward given the fact we have agreed the mechanisms and structures required to give families a range of options.
“We need to continue with the discussions, including those with victims’ groups.
“I am a bit disappointed that some don’t see a resolution before the election but it gives me the impression that people are up for resolving it post election.
Mr McGuinness concluded: “However, the last thing we need coming out of the election is more talks, we know what the problem is and we need to find a solution now.”
“Theresa Villiers knows it is a top priority and there is a responsibility upon the British Government to be part of the process of resolving the problem.
“We have heard the comments from the Victims Commissioner that we need a resolution now. We need to go forward therefore with a determination that these vital mechanisms and structures are implemented to provide for the needs of victims and survivors.”
