People in Derry have been urged to be make sure their homes are locked when they head out to take in tonight's Halloween celebrations in the city.

The SDLP councillor Shauna Cusack urged people to ensure their homes are secure before venturing out tonight after reports of a number of burglaries in the city.

"While many people may out enjoying this fantastic holiday and all the amazing events and festivities throughout the city, there are those who will use this opportunity to take advantage of empty homes. I've already heard of burglaries last night in the Lower Culmore area where cash and electronics where taken," she said.

"These opportunists will take whatever they can carry and with people distracted with the Party atmosphere they may pay less attention to their home security.

"We also have the added disadvantage that it's a time to dress up and this can provide the advantage of disguise by thieves."

"If going out for either a few minutes or all night, take time to lock up, use your alarm if you have one and leave all valuables out of sight.

"A few moments of caution could prevent the misery and upset of becoming a victim to thoughtless thugs."
