Plans to build £3.7m apartment complex on riverside site

Plans have been put forward to transform a neglected part of Derry’s riverside area (picture above).

Clanmil Housing Association has submitted a planning application to build an apartment complex at Victoria Road in the Waterside.

The site of the proposed development, which has an estimated cost of £3.7m, is close to Craigavon Bridge.

Clanmill want to construct a building on the site which would contain 39 social housing apartments.

The Victoria Road land was previously home to a number of buildings owned by the Foyle Fisheries Commission, most of which have been knocked down.

The only remaining building is an ‘ice house’ which was used to store fish caught in the River Foyle.

Clanmil say their plans for the site will involve the retention of the ‘ice house.’

The proposed Victoria Road development is one of a number being put forward in Derry by Clanmil.

The housing association plans to spend £12.6m building 144 new properties in the city.

The largest of the developments will involve 78 properties at a Northland Road site, made up of 62 apartments and 16 houses.

The cost of these properties is estimated at £6.5m and a planning application for the development was submitted to the DoE last week.

The properties will be built at a site beside the Springtown Business Park at Northland Road.

The association is also planning to construct 17 properties at Foxhill in the Waterside, made up of 14 apartments and three houses.

The Foxhill properties will cost £1.6m to build.

Clanmil also wants to build nine apartments at Clooney Terrace at a cost of £760,000.

If granted planning permission, the work on these apartments is expected to begin in February next year.
