PSNI urge home-owners to secure oil tanks
Winter is coming. The days are getting shorter and the nights, longer, and the temperature is in a steady decline.
For some of us this means turning on the central heating, and that means getting oil in the tank, which then becomes a target for thieves.
The police in Derry have recieved two reports of homes that have fallen victim to oil theives within the last 24 hours; both incidents took place on Creggan Street. Police investigating a small white van that was spotted in the area.
Meanwhile, Mandy Monteith, the Crime Prevention Officer, said filled tanks are likely to be a target for thieves and some precautions are needed:
• Make it hard for intruders to access your tank
• Fit a good quality lock to your tank and any exterior boiler
• Check your tank regularly
• Keep a look out for suspicious activity in your neighbourhood.
Detailed advice is available form your oil supplier, or from the Crime Prevention Officer at a police station. Telephone 101 to make contact.
