The Police have said that people who have posted comments 'that they know to be untrue in order to cause needless anxiety may be guilty of an offence'

The PSNI in Derry have issued a warning to people posting inaccurate information regarding an appeal over a Donegal woman who has been missing since the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Police have said that they are ‘growing concerned’ about Anita Robinson, a 26-year-old from Ballybofey who is missing.

On Monday night, the PSNI circulated an appeal, but following a series of comments to the contrary police have had to clarify that the missing person appeal is still ongoing.

“Some people have posted inaccurate comments which have understandably caused distress to all concerned,” the PSNI said.

“These posts have now been deleted. Furthermore screenshots have been taken and the URL of those posting comments that they know to be untrue in order to cause needless anxiety may be guilty of an offence under Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003.”

The PSNI say they will be ‘reviewing’ this in due course and added: “Regardless of this, please be mindful when posting of those closest to Anita and who remain concerned for her at this time.”

Anita was last believed to be in the Derry area in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

She is described as approximately 5ft4, of a very slim build and with long black hair tied in a ponytail.

Anita was last seen wearing black jeans, a black coat and a black jumper.

Two dates of birth are tattooed on her wrist and she has a scar on the inside of her right arm

The PSNI spokesperson said: “Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen Anita or matching her description to contact 101 and quote reference ‘1626 - 01/01/24’.”
