The footballers of St. Columb’s College will tomorow take part in an exhibition game against a team from South Africa, all in the name of charity.

The match, which will take place at Institute’s Riverside Stadium at 1.00pm, will see the best the Derry school has to offer go up against a team of youngsters from the township of George.

The group, part of the Sports Academy George, have come to Northern Ireland for a whistle stop tour of games.

St. Columb’s College teacher and coach James Green explained the background to the game.

“A couple from Northern Ireland have gone across to South Africa and seen the poverty here so they decided to pack up the business they had here and move out there and use sport and religion to try to inspire local people in the township to want to do better,” he explained.

“They work with a number of schools in the area to take part in different sports, to educate them and to show them a different way of life so they have something to strive towards.”
