The Strathfoyle community in Derry have been praised after over £6,000 was raised for a number of projects in memory of a young man from the area who died earlier this year.

Patrick Kelly’s body was recovered from the River Foyle in February.

The 18-year-old, who was known as Paddy to his friends, was from Strathfoyle.

The recent Strathfoyle Commnuity festival saw a number of events, including a 5k race and charity boxing night, which raised a total of £6,366.

Among those who benefitted from the funding were Foyle Search and Rescue, Youth Life, the Tiny Tots Community Playgroup and the Strathfoyle Women’s Activity Group.

Alex Duffy of the Strathfoyle Community Association, said they were delighted with the response they received to the various fundraisers.

“Strathfoyle is a very close knit community, and many people were deeply affected by Paddy’s death, particularly the young people in Strathfoyle,” he said.

“There was a great response to the events, which were put on as part of the recent community festival, such as the 5k hosted by REACH Running Club, and a charity boxing night which proved very popular.

“There was also a dance in the REC Club, and I’m glad that we were able to raise the money for these groups, such as Youth Life, who have worked alongside young people in the Strathfoykle area.

“The fact that money was also raised for the Strathfoyle Women’s Activity Group is also great, as they were hit with funding cuts recently.”

Mr Duffy added courses were being held for a Level 2 accreditation in counselling, and anyone interested should contact either him or Nadine McBride at Strathfoyle Youth Club on 02871 860344.”
