Judge condemns "high degree of distress" caused by theft of TV, phone, and food.
A man has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with stealing items valued at more than £500 from his mother.
Sean Francis Morrison (36) of Great James Street in Derry admitted the theft which occurred on September 19 2025.
He also admitted a charge of criminal damage to a police vehicle on February 20 2026.
Passing sentence District Judge Suzanne Rice said that the theft of a television, a phone and food items valued at more than £500 had caused 'a high degree of distress' to his mother who she said was 'a very vulnerable individual'.
As regards the criminal damage the court heard that Morrison had kicked a vehicle damaging a unit on it.
Morrison was sentenced to two months in prison suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay £500 in compensation.
Judge Rice told him 'treat this as a lesson hanging over your head.'
