39-year-old threatened his former partner's family when denied access to his child

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged with threatening and abusive behaviour towards his former partner.

Gavin Campbell (39) of Rosses Gate in Derry was charged with the offence that was said to have occurred on May 26 this year, when police were called by Campbell's former partner to report that he had been sending threatening messages.

Campbell was said to be threatening his former partner's family when she wouldn't allow him to see his child.

Defence Barrister Michael Donaghy said that the offence 'undoubtedly crossed the criminal threshold' and noted that Campbell has a 'significant' criminal record, but no previous domestic offences.

He said that Campbell had been in a fourteen year relationship with the injured party and that the incident in question occurred on one day when he had 'a meltdown'.

He also said that Campbell had no breaches of his bail in relation to this case and had 'held his hands up' and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

He was sentenced to five months in custody, suspended for three years, and a restraining order was imposed for five years.
