Toíbín: 'Trump’s call for a united Ireland is a significant contribution - we must build on it'

Peadar Tóibín has welcomed Donald Trump’s support for a united Ireland as “a significant contribution.”
The Aontú leader was commenting from the party’s think-in in Derry City on Saturday (September 12, 2026).
Mr Tóbín was responding to the US president saying he would love to see an united Ireland and believed it would happen.
He said: “We welcome this significant contribution. It’s important the Irish government take this statement and build momentum with it.”
Tóibín had earlier said: “It’s in our international interest to work well with the American president. Ireland has a responsibility to welcome him. He is the elected representative of the American people, even if we disagree on certain issues.
He added: “What I would like us to do is offer our services to the United States to try and become a catalyst of peace. We would like our government to take a more proactive neutrality-based approach to these conflicts.”
