Several Shamrock Rovers supporters visiting Derry for last night’s Airtricity Premier Division clash with Derry City were arrested and “escorted” out of the city, the PSNI has revealed.

A police spokesperson said three “away” fans were detained after “early disorder.”

There were no disturbances during the game which the home side won 3-0 to go to the top of the league.

Last month, Derry City said it would take measures to ensure supporters’ safety after violent scenes followed the Candy Stripes’ home league game against Cork City.

Derry City director Denis Bradley said the club was determined to stamp out trouble in order to ensure the safety of fans visiting the Brandywell.

Last month, six people were arrested after Shamrock Rovers’ opening league game of the season away to Sligo Rovers.

The Hoops won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Brandon Miele and Danny North, but the evening was marred by violence from a small number of visiting supporters before and during the match.

At the time, Sligo said charges had been brought against four of those involved.
