The Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust) has secured the prestigious award for Excellence in Antimicrobial Stewardship at the 2026 Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards.

Following a high-profile ceremony in Belfast, the Trust was celebrated for its pioneering work in antibiotic safety and collaborative patient care.

Jaquie Hanley, Consultant Pharmacist (Antimicrobials) at the Western Trust said: “We are absolutely delighted to be recognised in this year’s Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards for Excellence in Antimicrobial Stewardship.

"This is an innovative project involving antimicrobial pharmacy, Rapid Response and Trauma & Orthopaedic nursing teams who worked in collaboration with Southern Health and Social Care Trust (Southern Trust) colleagues.

“This initiative allows narrow spectrum antibiotics to be delivered via a 24 hour infusion, significantly reducing risk of resistance and adverse effects, while facilitating discharge from hospital which has made a positive difference to our patients. Well done to everyone involved.”
