When police observed a vehicle pulling out onto a man road at speed and being driven erratically they stopped it and suspected the driver to be under the influence, Derry Magistrate's Court heard today.

Gemma Carberry (42) of Fergleen Park in Derry admitted a charge of dangerous driving and failing to provide a sample of breath on December 7 last.

The court heard that police were on patrol and noticed the car pulling out at speed and crossing the white line.

The vehicle was travelling at speed at times up to 60mph and police signalled it to stop after the car hit a kerb on a roundabout.

The driver, Carberry, failed a preliminary breath test and then did not give an evidential test.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that his client felt 'deep shame and embarrassment'.

He said that it was a case of 'bad judgement' on her behalf but 'thankfully' no one was hurt.

Carberry was disqualified for 15 months and fined £350.
