A woman has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with stealing a basket of groceries from Sainsbury's.

Lisa McLaughlin (23) of Rockmills in Derry was charged with stealing £41.08 worth of items on July 27 after police were called by staff in the shop.

Staff had initially challenged McLaughlin as she left the shop and police later arrested her.

At the time of her arrest, the only item fit for resale was a bottle of vodka.

McLaughlin made full admissions when interviewed and has a relevant criminal record, including four convictions this year.

Police objected to bail as they believe she is at clear risk of reoffending.

Defence Barrister Stephen Chapman said that McLaughlin 'clearly has issues with alcohol' and asked that she be given a chance despite her past record.

Bail was granted and she will appear again on September 27 after a pre-sentence report is prepared.
