Work is set to begin on a new £2.8 million leisure centre in Dungiven, Co Derry.

Arts and Culture Minister Caral ni Chuillin will perform the official cutting of the sod at the site (pictured) in the Curragh Road area of the town next month.

The construction of the centre follows the decision last month by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council to finally back plans for the development.

The scheme has been in the pipeline for a number of years but councillors on the unionist-dominated had disagreed over funding, rejecting plans for the project on several occasions.

Members of the public are being encouraged to attend the sod cutting ceremony which will take place at 2.00pm on Friday, 26 March.

Kieran McKeever, of the Dungiven and Area Sports Forum, said: “The community have shown great support in delivering this project for the people of the town and surrounding areas so please, once again, come along and show your support.”
