Use the Next > above to go through the gallery Fanad Lighthouse Probably the most photographed place in Donegal! The lighthouse was built in 1817 after the HMS Saldanha was shipwrecked off the coast in 1811 while chasing a French privateer. Of the 253 on board the only survivor was the ships parrot. Another famous local shipwreck is of the SS Laurentic which was sunk in 1917 at the entrance to Lough Swilly after hitting two mines and with a loss of over 300 lives. The Laurentic also had a secret cargo of 3,211 gold bars worth over £5m, or €410m by todays standards, and 22 of those gold bars are said to be still down there ...

Use the Next > above to go through the gallery The Rosbeg horses Encountered these lads on the way to Rosbeg. The road from Ardara to Rosbeg was called the Santa Ana drive and I was wondering how it got that name. Turns out that in 1588 violent gales carried some Spanish Armada ships close to the west Donegal coast, and one of those ships, the Santa Ana, shipwrecked off Rosbeg. The commander and his surviving crew marched through Ardara to Killybegs, where they joined another armada ship, the Girona. The Girona set sail for Spain later that year with 1300 on board but was wrecked off the Antrim coats with the loss of all but nine lives

Use the Next > above to go through the gallery Pólifreann/Hells Hole, Malin Head This cross along Hells Hole at Malin Head is about as far north as you can get on this island. The scene is like something out of a pirate film with its small wooden cross and rusted coins on a small alter. The cross is said to have been erected some years ago in the memory of a young French man who drowned off Malin Head. I can make out Samuel (something) age 21 ...
