The biggest partial solar eclipse since 1999 will be visible over Donegal

An almost complete solar eclipse will be visible in Donegal on Wednesday evening.

The eclipse is broken down into three stages: the partial eclipse, the maximum eclipse, and the ending of the partial eclipse.

The partial eclipse begins at 6:12 pm, the moment the edge of the moon touches the edge of the sun, also known as first contact.

The maximum eclipse will occur at 7:10 pm, the deepest point of the eclipse where the sun is at its most hidden point.

The partial eclipse will end at 8:05 pm, when the edge of the Moon leaves the edge of the Sun.

About 92% to 95% of the Sun will be covered during the event, making it the most significant solar eclipse to be visible in Ireland since 1999.

A total eclipse of the Sun will be completely visible in parts of Portugal and northern Spain.
