A kitten who was rescued by Animals in Need after being badly burnt in a bin fire has made an “amazing recovery.”

The kitten, named Phoenix, was found after someone lit a fire in a metal bin to burn garden waste, unaware that Phoenix was inside.

It took five days to get a hold of Phoenix, who was immediately brought to Animals in Need after they received a distressing call from a member of the public.

“On arrival to AIN, he was covered in fly eggs, his fur zinged everywhere, and he was badly dehydrated,” shared Animals in Need. “One of his eyes was badly infected, and we thought, beyond saving. The majority of his burns were on his paws and face. He was rushed to the out-of-hour vet immediately to start his recovery. We were cautiously optimistic about his recovery, but he was pain-free and receiving all the best care, and we just hoped his body was strong enough to continue this battle.

“It's sadly a cat's nature to hide from pain, making it hard to get them the help they need. Thankfully, he is now in the right place and receiving the care he needs.

“We fully expected he was beyond saving, but Phoenix has amazed us every day with his spirit and his willingness to live. He is still on pain relief and antibiotics to fight the infection that had set in, and he has now even started washing himself, which is a great sign with any cat/ kitten. His eye, that we thought was beyond saving, has made an amazing recovery, his scabs are healing and falling off, the fly eggs and maggots are all removed and he is getting medicated baths for his healing skin.

Phoenix has made an amazing recovery since arriving at Animals in Need Donegal

“He looks amazing and has made best friends with another kitten in foster, who is so gentle with him and a great comfort to him.”

Phoenix is recovering in a foster home with fellow rescue kitten Leo. The pair have developed a close bond.

“Leo was a kitten who was found after an accident earlier in the year. It left him with light brain damage and deaf. Not that he seems to know, he is full of life and a busy little kitten.

“He was lucky, and was offered a home with a great couple, who have dedicated their lives to looking after special needs kittens and cats.

“When they saw Phoenix's story, they offered to foster him straight away and while he is in foster care, Leo seems to have become his protector and has taken a real shine to Phoenix and the 2 are to be found snuggled up together most of the time. While Leo is a busy kitten, he seems to know to take it slowly with Phoenix while he is recovering. Their friendship has been instant and a great comfort to Phoenix in his recovery.”
