‘These homeowners are being asked to consider remediating their properties under the Defective Concrete Scheme while the flood risk remains unresolved’

Deputy Charles Ward has raised the ongoing concerns of nine homeowners in Elm Park, Buncrana, who are living with the combined threat of defective concrete and flooding, with An Taoiseach Micheál Martin in the Dail.

The 100% Redress Party leader said: “The Minister repeatedly stated that legal advice from the Attorney General’s office is being considered and that discussions are ongoing with the OPW. However, these responses have been repeated over several months without providing any definitive answers or meaningful clarity for the residents.”

Deputy Ward continued: “These homeowners are being asked to consider remediating their properties under the Defective Concrete Scheme while the flood risk remains unresolved. Understandably, they are worried about investing in the remediation of their homes without knowing when, or even how, the flooding issue will be addressed.”

The Redress Party leader asked the Taoiseach: “Has a decision been made on whether a relocation option will be provided? If not, what specific issues remain outstanding, and when will a decision be reached?”

Deputy Ward said the residents cannot be left indefinitely waiting on legal advice and interdepartmental discussions.

“They need certainty, a clear timeline and, above all, a practical solution. Will you commit to providing a definitive update and a timeframe for a decision?” he asked.

In response, the Taoiseach said: “I will engage with the Minister for Housing in respect of this. In terms of a timeline, I don't have a specific timeline here. The Government has responded to the overall defective concrete blocks debacle and scandal very comprehensively, in an unprecedented way.”
