The issue was raised at a meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District

Councillors agreed that traffic lights are needed to improve safety at what is ‘probably the worst bend in Ireland’.

Councillor Seamus McDonald asked in a motion "that Laois County Council put in place traffic calming measures at Shelly's Corner, Rosenallis."

In response, the Council said: “This proposal will be examined with the Municipal District Office and according to the recently adopted Laois County Council Traffic Calming Policy, Guidance Document on the Selection and Implementation of Traffic Calming Measures.”

Cllr McDonald said “it is probably the worst bend in Ireland” going through any village.

“The Road Hauliers Association are putting severe pressure on me to try and get funding to have it made safe,” said Cllr McDonald. He said traffic lights would make it safe.

Cllr Paddy Bracken seconded the motion and said something needed to be done on the busy road.

Cllr James Kelly also supported the motion and said “traffic lights is the only answer. We need traffic lights there. It is a very dangerous road.”

The road was described as “very dangerous” by Cllr Ollie Clooney who said the lights were badly needed.

The issue was discussed during the October meeting of Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
