Cllr Tomás Seán Devine made the call for a meeting to take place ahead of the Christmas period to discuss traffic

Further calls have been made for an urgent meeting to find solutions to Letterkenny’s traffic.

Cllr Tomás Seán Devine has asked for a meeting with the gardaí to put measures in place that will decrease congested traffic in the town during the busy shopping period.

Cllr Devine, 100% Redress, said he feels as though traffic lights in the town are causing unnecessary delays.

“Can I ask that we can arrange a meeting ASAP with gardaí and the road section to discuss the traffic coming up to Christmas?” he said. “I do believe we need to sit down and plan ahead. I think there are traffic lights that are seriously causing unnecessary delays.”

A similar meeting was held last year in December which aimed to prevent traffic congestion in the town, but Cllr Devine felt as though that was ‘too late’.

“Last year we held a meeting, and I think it was too late in the year… I have seen no change from last year to this year, and just running into this Christmas, we don’t want to end up with the same issues.

“We’re all aware of the traffic situation in Letterkenny at the minute, and if we’re trying to change things it would help to have the meeting… but these things haven't happened.

“The traffic lights around Letterkenny, I don’t think that they’re serving any purpose. They could be looked at, and if needs be, they could be covered up for the Christmas period. It would help if these things are looked at now.”

The motion was seconded by Cllr Michael McBride, who said that planning in advance for the busy Christmas period would be a good idea.
