A request for a civic reception for gold medal winner, Mark English, was made by councillors of the Stranorlar-Letterkenny MD

A civic reception for Donegal’s gold medal winner Mark English was proposed at this week's Lifford-Stranorlar MD meeting.

The Letterkenny native is a Finn Valley AC member and became the first Irish man to win a gold medal at the European Athletics Championship, winning the 800 metres final in Birmingham last month.

English, who is 33 years old, had previously won five European medals before setting a championship record in his semi-final and taking the gold in the final

Cathaoirleach Patrick McGowan put forward the proposal, saying, “The club asked me if he could be honoured with a countywide Civic Reception.”

Fine Gael councillor Martin Harley seconded the proposal./

Cllr Gary Doherty said he would bring the proposal for the civic reception to the next meeting of the Corporate Policy Group (CPG) to be confirmed by Donegal County Council.
