'Another example of the council denying the electorate the right to have their democratically elected representative to work on their behalf'

Controversial independent Raphoe councillor, Frank McBrearty Jnr has challenged the legality of Monday's Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District annual general meeting. He did not attend as he is currently suspended from all council meetings due to an ongoing dispute.

In a hard-hitting statement, he says he does not recognise the election of Sinn Féin's Cllr Liam Doherty as cathaoirleach and Fianna Fáil's Cllr Patrick McGowan as leas-cathaoirleach.

"Do you think it is democratic that I was unlawfully not allowed to attend the AGM. The position of less-cathaoirleach was supposed to be mine, not Cllr McGowan's. He has already held that position."

Cllr McBrearty Jnr said this was another example of the council denying the electorate the right to have their democratically elected representative to do work on their behalf.

"That meeting legally should have been held in the Chamber and I am now questioning the legality of why it was not as the public is entitled to attend. The council did not afford them this opportunity. On this basis, I do not recognise or accept the election of Cllr Liam Doherty as cathaoirleach or Cllr Patrick McGowan as leas-cathaoirleach," he said.
