A Donegal Town paediatric nursing student is travelling to Tanzania later this year to work in the country’s largest referral hospital.

Molly McGroary from Drimarone along with Jessica Oboh from Kilkenny, both second year students in DCU, are flying out in the summer.

The students will undertake a four week clinical placement in Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city. This opportunity is in conjunction with Their Lives Matter (TLM) Organisation and Children’s Health Ireland (CHI).

Molly has set up a fundraiser for the trip - Supporting Paediatric Oncology Care in Tanzania.

“During our time there, we will be based in the Paediatric Oncology Unit, caring for children and families facing cancer in an incredibly challenging healthcare setting,” said Molly.

“While this placement is an invaluable learning opportunity for us, it also comes with significant costs - including flights, accommodation, visas, and essential vaccinations. We are funding this experience ourselves through fundraising and community support. Our goal is not only to cover the cost of getting there, but also to give back directly to Muhimbili National Hospital.

“Any funds raised beyond our essential expenses will be donated directly to the Paediatric Oncology Unit, where resources are often limited and even small contributions can make a meaningful difference.”

Donations can help gather basic medical and ward supplies, comfort items for children undergoing long-term treatment, and resources to support families during extended hospital stays.

“Every contribution - no matter how small - will help improve care and comfort for children facing cancer,” said Molly.

“We don't realise how lucky we are with the resources we have here in Ireland. So with your help we can give back to the Dar es Salaam community in helping their hospital to advance and succeed.”
