1.
Rathmullan Abbey: Built in 1518 by the McSwineys of Fanad it was later turned into a priory before being plundered by Captain George Bingham from Sligo and then turned into an army barracks of 150 men in 1601. In 1617 Bishop Andrew Knox took possession of it and turned it into his own Palace and it remained in the Knox family until the late 1800s after which it became derelict. The Abbey had been closed for a few years after becoming overgrown with ivy but its great to see it recently reopen after some renovations.
2.
Assaranca Waterfall: A must-see for any Donegal road trip, and pretty easy to locate. Well worth a visit any time you're out West, and especially after a heavy rain.
3.
Fort Dunree: One of the coolest locations in Donegal in my opinion! From the little drawbridge to the gun batteries. One of seven forts built along the Swilly during the Naloleanic war, with Fort Dunree itself built after Wolfe Tone tried to land in Buncrana with a French fleet in 1798 as part of the United Irishmen Rebellion. Lough Swilly has had strategic importance due to its depth and during WWI the British fleet guarding the North Sea anchored there.
4.
The Sabrina: An old abandoned fishing boat hidden away on Mulroy Bay. Does anyone know the story behind this boat?
