Inish Theatre Group will bring Roald Dahl’s beloved story to St Mary’s Hall next March, with roles available for performers of all ages.

Buncrana is set for a sweet theatrical treat next spring as Inish Theatre Group prepares to bring Roald Dahl’s magical world of Willy Wonka to the stage.

The group has announced that its next major production will be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical, with performances scheduled for St Mary’s Hall from March 7th to 13th.

The production marks a significant milestone for Inish Theatre Group, which was established in 2023 and has continued to expand its involvement in the local community. With just over six months to opening night, preparations are getting underway for what promises to be a large-scale production involving performers of all ages.

At the centre of the story is Charlie Bucket, a young boy whose life changes dramatically after he discovers one of Willy Wonka’s legendary Golden Tickets. His journey will take Buncrana audience members into the extraordinary chocolate factory, where he encounters a colourful cast of characters including Grandpa Joe, Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teavee and the unforgettable Oompa-Loompas.

The musical also features some of the best-known songs associated with the story, including The Candy Man, I’ve Got a Golden Ticket, Oompa Loompa Song and Pure Imagination.

For Inish Theatre Group, however, the message behind the story is particularly significant.

Director Maureen Loughrey Tolley believes the story's themes make it particularly appropriate for a group built around participation and inclusion.

“There is something very special about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Beneath all the colour, humour and magic is a wonderful story about hope, imagination and a young person who continues to dream despite his circumstances.”

Maureen added that the musical would provide an opportunity to bring different generations of performers together and allow the group to put its own creative stamp on Wonka’s extraordinary world.

“This production gives us an incredible opportunity to bring children, teenagers and adults together on the same stage, and we are already full of ideas about how we can create the magical world of Willy Wonka here in Buncrana.”

Secretary and PRO of the theatre company Adrian McMyler said the journey of Charlie Bucket mirrors some of the group's own experience since it first began.

“When Inish Theatre Group started, we had big ambitions and plenty of ideas, but none of us could have predicted how quickly the group would grow or the support we would receive from the community.”

“That is one of the reasons I love this story so much. It reminds you that you are never too small to start and no dream is ever too big to dream. Sometimes something that begins with a simple idea can grow into something you never imagined.”

That ethos will be reflected in the casting process, with opportunities available not only for experienced performers but also for those looking to develop confidence, make friends or take their first steps on stage.

The production will feature principal roles for children, teenagers and adults. Young performers will be particularly important to the production, with children and teenagers contributing to the ensemble and the colourful Oompa-Loompa sequences.

Among the roles to be cast are Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket, Grandpa Joe, Mrs Bucket, Augustus Gloop and Mrs Gloop, Violet Beauregarde and Mr Beauregarde, Veruca Salt and Mr Salt, Mike Teavee and Mrs Teavee. The production will also include the Bucket grandparents, television reporters Jerry and Cherry, and other supporting roles.

The first major date in the production calendar will be Saturday, September 26th, when principal auditions will be held in Buncrana from 12 noon to 2pm.

Children and teenagers interested in younger principal roles will be able to audition on the day. However, members wishing to participate solely in the ensemble will not be required to undertake a principal audition.

Rehearsals are expected to begin in mid-October, ahead of an intensive few months of preparations before the curtain rises.

Behind the scenes, the production will demand just as much commitment as it does from those appearing on stage.

Treasurer Sean Tolley said a show of this size requires a major team effort, involving everything from costumes and set construction to music, technical production and rehearsal facilities.

“Productions like this require a huge amount of work behind the scenes as well as on stage.”

Mr Tolley said the group's ability to undertake ambitious productions was made possible by the support it has received in Buncrana and the wider Inishowen area.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone who attends our productions, volunteers their time or supports the group in any way. We are really looking forward to the challenge of bringing this particular show to life.”

Chairperson Elaine Marie McGinley said one of the most exciting aspects of the project was the opportunity to bring people from different generations together.

“One of the nicest things about Inish Theatre Group is seeing people of different ages and backgrounds coming together because they share a love of theatre and community.”

The chairwoman hopes the new production will attract both familiar faces and people who have never previously been involved with the group.

“There are opportunities for children, teenagers and adults, and we hope to see returning members alongside plenty of new faces.”

“There is already a real buzz within the group about this production, and we cannot wait to welcome everyone and begin the journey towards March.”
