Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter will once again come alive during Heritage Week with a series of events celebrating the history, architecture, traditional skills and community spirit of one of Donegal's most significant historic areas.
A series of events will celebrate the history, architecture, traditional skills and community spirit of one of Donegal’s most significant historic areas.
The programme invites residents and visitors alike to explore the rich heritage of Letterkenny's Cathedral Quarter through guided tours, live craft demonstrations and an open day showcasing the work of the Cathedral Quarter heritage project.
The programme begins on Monday, August 17, with the popular Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter Jaunt, a guided evening walk through Letterkenny's only Architectural Conservation Area.
Led by Cathedral Quarter Secretary, Donnan Harvey, the tour will reveal the fascinating stories behind St. Eunan's Cathedral, Conwal Parish Church, Church Lane and the many historic buildings, monuments and hidden features that make the Cathedral Quarter such a unique part of the town.
Participants will also learn about the area's ongoing regeneration and the community efforts to preserve its heritage for future generations.
The Jaunt begins at 8 pm at the Hiring Fair statue on the Market Square.
The celebrations continue on Wednesday, August 19, with the Cathedral Quarter Office Open Day at No. 3 Church Lane, running from 10 am to 4 pm.
Visitors are invited to explore an extensive collection of historic photographs, maps, newspaper archives and memorabilia documenting the history of the Cathedral Quarter and the wider Letterkenny area. Volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to share local stories, discuss ongoing heritage initiatives and welcome anyone interested in becoming involved with future projects.
On Saturday, August 22, visitors can enjoy Traditional Skills Day in the yard behind No. 1 and No. 3 Church Lane, where skilled craftspeople will demonstrate traditional carpentry and blacksmithing techniques. The event offers a rare opportunity to see heritage skills in action while highlighting the importance of safeguarding traditional crafts that have shaped Irish communities for generations.
Speaking ahead of the events, a spokesperson said: "Heritage Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the unique character and history of the Cathedral Quarter. Whether you're discovering these stories for the first time or reconnecting with familiar places, we hope people of all ages will come along, enjoy the events and gain a deeper appreciation of the heritage that surrounds us every day."
The events form part of National Heritage Week 2026, Ireland's annual celebration of natural, built and cultural heritage, and are designed to encourage people to engage with, value and help protect their local heritage.
Full event details and booking information are available through the National Heritage Week website and Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter social media channels.
