McGettigan’s Hotel has designated 50 rooms to accommodate refugees

The first Ukrainian refugees to be accommodated in one Letterkenny hotel are expected to arrive on Monday or Tuesday.

McGettigan’s Hotel in Letterkenny has given over 50  rooms to accommodate Ukrainian families.

Michéal Naughton, a county councillor and general manager of McGettigan's Hotels in Letterkenny, said 32 of the hotel’s rooms are available for booking by guests.

Speaking on Monday, he confirmed that the first Ukrainian families who have fled from the Russian invasion of the country were expected to arrive at the hotel later on Monday or Tuesday.

The hotel is due to take Ukrainian refugees that could not be accommodated in three of the group’s hotels in Dublin and Bray, Mr Naughton said.

Some bookings have been cancelled in recent days but the hotel has been trying to accommodate guests in the group’s Clanree Hotel or other hotels in the town, he added.

Small numbers of refugees are already being accommodated in hotels in the south of the county for short periods.

Guesthouses in Bundoran have been helping to accommodate around 150 refugees who arrived in the town last week.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has predicted there will be 20,000 Ukrainian refugees in the State by the end of the month.

The Government has been contacting hotels throughout the country seeking accommodation for Ukrainian families for periods of three months or more amid concerns of an accommodation shortage.
