A solicitor for the man told Letterkenny District Court: 'He fell off the wagon for a short, momentary period and has since avoided negative individuals and influences'

A Letterkenny man who was charged with drug-driving “fell off the wagon” momentarily, a court has been told.

Bernard Alcorn, of Leck Cottages, Letterkenny, pleaded guilty to a drug-driving charge.

The 42-year-old was charged with driving a mechanically propelled vehicle while exceeding the drug-driving limit at Convent Road, Letterkenny, on December 29, 2023.

Inspector Seamus McGonigle told Letterkenny District Court that Alcorn tested positive for the presence of both cannabis and cocaine.

“He apologises and it was a slip in judgement,” Alcorn’s solicitor, Mr Rory O’Brien, said. “It was a slip in relation to using drugs. He was clean and sober for a period of time. Unfortunately, he slipped around the Christmas break.

“He fell off the wagon for a short, momentary period and has since avoided negative individuals and influences.”

Mr O’Brien said the punishment for the offence will have a “very significant impact” on Alcorn.

Inspector McGonigle said the State had no objection for a six-month deferral on the commencement of a driving disqualification.

Judge Ciaran Liddy put Alcorn off the road for a period of one year and the defendant was also fined €100.
