Watch: Nabla Diver celebrates 107th birthday with party in Killybegs Community Hospital

There was a great turnout of family and friends as Nabla Diver from Shannagh, Kilcar celebrated another milestone birthday - her 107th - in Killybegs Community Hospital, Killybegs on Friday.

Now the third oldest living person in Ireland, Nabla posed for photographs as music and song filled the Day Room of the hospital, which included many of the other patients at the hospital.

Among those present were her nephew Paddy O'Donnell and niece Brid McGinley, who has fond memories of the centenarian from her youth.

"Nabla was a hard worker. She worked on the farm. She did all the baking. She looked after the cows. She was very good in the garden. Indeed, she was good at whatever she put her hand to.

"Sher was a very good housekeeper. She never got married but lived with her brother Tommy.

"You could eat your dinner off the floor in their house, it was that clean," said Brid.

Nabla had three sisters and two brothers - Mary, Maggie, Kathleen as well as Tommy and Patrick.

She has nieces and nephews in Ireland and England as well as grand-nieces and great grand-nieces.

Brid's first memory of Nabla was of her cycling from her home in Kilcar all the way to her house in Crove "to help my mother, Mary, who was her sister.

"She used to do that at times when the Stations were being held and things like that. She would help to get the whole house ready for the stations. That was a good cycle. And she mightn't even stay the night. She's head away home in the evening," said Brid, who says reaching the age of 107 is amazing.

"She was always healthy and she moved into the Centre in Carrick about 14 years ago and she was there until about two years ago.

"Then she came in here (to Killybegs Community Hospital)."

One of Brid's greatest memories of Nabla is her baking. "She made fantastic bread. She was a great chef. She kept everything very well. She also liked music.

"One of the things she liked was Shoe the Donkey, even though I never seen her dancing.”

Born on September 11, 1919, in Shannagh, Kilcar, Nabla was the youngest of six children. She always had that independent streak and adhered to a healthy lifestyle, having never smoked or drank. “She never got stressed and always had a healthy diet,” Brid adds. “She just keeps going and never complains.”

Nabla recently received her Centenarian Bounty this time from new Catherine Connolly, having received the others from President Michael D Higgins.

Nabla is one of a long list of centenarians from the Kilcar area over the last 32 years - a list that runs to 19. Surely this is a record that cannot be surpassed anywhere in Ireland.
