The Play Hubs launched in Letterkenny

The new POD Play Hub has launched at the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre in Westside Apartments, Letterkenny.

The facility was officially opened by Dr. Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children, highlighting a significant step forward in supporting children living in direct provision and emergency accommodation settings.

The POD Play Hub is a dedicated, child-centred space designed to provide a safe, vibrant, and stimulating environment where young residents can engage in free play. By creating a welcoming space within the Westside Apartments centre, the hub aims to promote physical health, cognitive development, and emotional wellbeing among children living in IPAS accommodation.

Speaking at the official launch, Ireland’s Ombudsman for Children, Dr. Niall Muldoon, said: “I am delighted to be in Letterkenny today for the opening of the new POD Play Hub. Having the space and time to play is such an important part of being a child and plays a crucial role in their wellbeing and development.

“All children have a right to play, and this right is protected under Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), of which Ireland is a signatory. Play helps children build relationships, solve problems, and improves their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional skills.”

Beyond supporting child development, the POD Play Hub serves as an essential focal point for building social networks within accommodation centres and bridging relationships with the surrounding local community.

Living in temporary or communal environments can often present challenges around isolation and stress for families. The hub offers a structured space where parents can interact, share experiences, support one another, and build meaningful relationships with their peers.

The Director of Services for the Donegal Parenting Organisation, Mary Walker Callaghan, said: "Play is not a luxury or an afterthought; it is a vital component of a child's healthy development, mental well-being, and sense of normalcy. For children living in IPAS accommodation, having access to safe, vibrant spaces where they can simply be children, play, and express themselves is essential. Initiatives like the POD Play Hub restore a crucial piece of childhood and provide these young people with the comfort and creative outlets they deserve."

The POD Play Hub initiative includes: dedicated play environments with age-appropriate toys, learning resources, and creative areas designed to encourage physical activity and imaginative play.

The initiative also provided family and social support by creating a space for parents to ge together and build social connections.

The POD Play Hub provides opportunities for collaborative activities that assist families in adapting to their local surroundings in Letterkenny.

The launch event was attended by residents, community advocates, local stakeholders, and representatives from support organisations dedicated to improving conditions for asylum-seeking families in Donegal.

The establishment of the POD Play Hub reflects a continued commitment to fulfilling children's rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, ensuring that every child living in IPAS accommodation across Ireland has access to safe play, creative expression, and strong community support.
