An Garda Síochána Donegal arrested a number of drivers for driving under the influence

This bank holiday weekend, nine drivers in Donegal were arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence.

Four drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, while five were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol between Friday, October 23, and Tuesday, October 27.

A number of speeding offences were detected across the Division, and a large number of vehicles were seized for no insurance, tax, NCT, or because of suspected dangerous driving. A car was also seized from a learner driver who was unaccompanied.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “We continue to urge drivers not to make careless decisions when it comes to road safety. These types of decisions can and often do lead to tragedy.

“Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs; slow down and wear your seatbelt. Leave your mobile phone well out of reach when driving. Never take any type of unnecessary risks on the roads.

“We advise all pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooter users to please wear a hi-vis vest and to ensure that they are highly visible to drivers at all times.

“Halloween can be a fun time of year, but unfortunately for some people it is far from fun due to the misbehaviour of a few!”
