The iconic Tin Shop on the Donegal Town side of Barnesmore Gap could be demolished.
Plans have been lodged to demolish the former shop premises at Drumnaghan, Donegal Town.
Eithne Martin is seeking planning permission for works to include the demolition of an existing outbuilding and former shop premises known as The Tin Shop and associated site development works.
The planning application notes that the proposal will require works to be carried out to a protected structure.
The structure was initially built by William and Hannah Martin in 1905.
It is believed that it was originally erected as a meeting house or, possibly an Orange Hall. There is a Wesleyan Methodist Meeting House’ indicated on a 1907 map just to the south of the site.
The National Built Heritage Service say that it is possible that the shop was formerly the meeting house, and it was later moved to its present location.
The NBHS describe it as a “charming and quite picturesque former shop” which has retained its “early form, character and much of its early fabric. It is notable for the use of corrugated-metal sheeting for both cladding the walls and as a roofing material.”
The shop closed in 2006, but has remained something of a landmark structure along the N15.
