Popular Donegal wedding venue gets approval for major expansion

Drumhalla House granted permission for new function hall
A popular Donegal wedding venue has been granted planning permission from Donegal County Council for a major expansion of its premises.
Drumhalla House, near Rathmullan, successfully applied for the construction of a new two-storey structure to include a new function hall and associated back of house to replace an existing marquee and back of house facilities, along with nine new bedrooms as an extension of the existing ancillary wedding venue accommodation.
The application involved the demolition of an existing marquee and back-of-house facilities, the partial demolition of the existing stone and brick wall, the decommissioning of an existing wastewater treatment system and the installation of a replacement wastewater treatment system and all associated siteworks.
Drumhalla House is a period property close to Lough Swilly and can accommodate up to 290 guests at a wedding reception.
A project overview published as part of the application stated: “Drumhalla House is one of Ireland’s most scenic and distinctive alternative wedding venues, situated adjacent to the picturesque Kinnegar Beach in Rathmullan, Co. Donegal.
“The estate’s coastal setting and historical charm make it a prominent destination for wedding event private hire.
“The purpose of this application is to secure permission for works aimed at enhancing the overall visitor experience while preserving and respecting the architectural character and natural setting of the site.
“The proposed works are for the most part a replacement of existing facilities and are contained within an existing walled garden.”
Within the project overview, it was concluded: “The proposed development represents a sensitive and sustainable investment in one of Donegal’s most iconic hospitality venues.
“In replacing existing infrastructure, the proposals are designed to improve the visitor experience, enhance the aesthetic of the site, and protect the historic and natural qualities that make Drumhalla House unique.
“The proposals are fully consistent with the objectives of the Donegal County Development Plan 2024–2030 and will contribute positively to the region’s rural tourism offering.”
Donegal County Council granted permission for the application with nine conditions, including a condition imposed that the applicant shall pay a contribution of €14,343, in respect of public infrastructure and facilities benefiting development in the area of the Planning Authority that is already provided or is intended to be provided by the Authority.
