Buncrana-based Cllr Fionán Bradley has asked people who wish to make donations to charity shops, to do so during opening hours

A Donegal County Councillor has asked people to refrain from “leaving donations or dumping” things outside charity shops.

Buncrana-based Cllr Fionán Bradley, Fianna Fáil, appealed after household waste and damaged furniture was found on the streets of the town following the weekend.

“This is the scene that greeted staff in a charity shop on Buncrana's main street this morning as they opened their doors after the weekend,” he said, having shared the message on social media.

“While at face value this stuff might look simply like donations, when the staff inspected it they discovered most of it had been dumped there. Empty boxes, bags of household waste and damaged furniture were some of the things they found. They now have to pay to have this stuff removed and have asked me to highlight this on their behalf.

“This isn't unique to one charity shop - many of them experience the same problem. Can I please appeal to everyone to refrain from leaving donations or dumping outside charity shops. If you want to donate a small item, leave it in while the premises are open. If you have a larger item like furniture, arrange with the staff or volunteers to inspect it to see if they have room in their shop to accept it.”
