Carn FC plans to build a new new two-storey clubhouse and sports hall

Objections have been lodged against plans by Carndonagh FC for a major sporting development on the outskirts of the town which is part of a €3m plan to develop new facilities for the area.

The club has applied to Donegal County Council to build a new two-storey clubhouse and sports hall to include changing and showering facilities, a function room and an indoor training pitch, at Carrickafoden.

The plans also include three outdoor pitches - a main grass pitch, a grass training pitch and a 3G pitch - and a walking track.

Permission is also being sought for a new wastewater treatment plant with a percolation area, along with associated site works.

Two objections from local residents have been lodged against the plans expressing concern about noise and light pollution, an increase in traffic in the area and the potential impact on the Trawbreaga Bay special protection area.

A decision from Donegal County Council on the application is due by the end of the month.

Carndonagh FC says it has more than 320 youth members aged from four to 17 and more than 80 senior players.

The development is part of a €3m joint plan to develop a family hub and new sports facilities in the town.

Under the plan, the club will vacate its home at St Patrick's Park, which will be turned into Donegal’s first child and family hub developed by Spraoi, the Carndonagh-based local social enterprise. The joint venture was announced in September by the Trustees of St Patrick’s Park and Carrick Sports Field Committee.

At the time, chair of Carndonagh FC Jim Coyle described the plans as “a significant opportunity to see state-of-the-art sporting facilities on one site in Carrickafoden”.

“It offers us the chance to cater better for our membership and especially the 320 children that attend training,” he said.
