Over 2,200 fish were killed on the Glenagannon river in August last year

A prosecution over a major fish kill in Inishowen last year is due to come before court next month.

More than 2,250 fish were killed on the Glenagannon river near Carondonagh in the incident which was reported to Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) on August 26 last year by a member of the public using the State agency’s 24-hour hotline.

The fish kill covered approximately 4 km of the river and comprised several year classes of fish including juvenile brown trout and Atlantic salmon, which is “a species in crisis”, according to the international North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation.

An investigation into the incident was launched and IFI said at the time it was following a definite line of inquiry to determine the cause, “which may result in legal proceedings being initiated”.

IFI said the prompt alert to the incident allowed it to instigate our investigations without delay.

A spokeswoman for IFI confirmed to the Inish Times that a case relating to the fish kill is due before Carndonagh District Court sitting in Buncrana on May 16 for mention.
