EDUCATIONAL SCHOOL TOUR TO BARCELONA

With Covid disruption, it had been a few years since CVS students had the opportunity to travel outside of Ireland so there was great anticipation for our school tour to Barcelona earlier in the month. 42 Senior students travelled with a group of supervising teachers. They enjoyed three days of excursions, encompassing the main sights of Barcelona including La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Park Guell, Gaudi Architecture, the Picasso Museum and the Cosmo Caixa Science Museum. Entertainment was provided in the form of bowling and a visit to Port Aventura theme park.  Travel abroad is important for students in that it creates confidence in travelling and exposes students to the culture, language and food of another country. All reports on return were positive so we hope that this long CVS tradition is back to stay!placeholder image

EDUCATIONAL / SUBJECT SPECIFIC TRIPS

Geography: 3rd Year Geography travelled to the Marble Arch Caves and Limestone Trails in County Fermanagh for a very enjoyable and magical trip while LCA1 students joined LC Geography students on their recent field trip to Tanagh.

History: All our 1st Year students visited the delightful Glenview Museum outside Ballinamore this month for a look at the social history of Ireland in the 20th century, told through the enormous collection of objects housed there. Thank you as always to Brian Kennedy for being an excellent host and guide.

Gaeilge: Leaving Cert Irish students visited the Hawks Well Theatre in Sligo to see a production of the play they are studying – An Triail.

TALKS AND SPEAKERS

Road Safety Talk: As part of National Road Safety Week, Louise from Road Safety Ireland gave a series of talks to our 3rd Year and senior students. This was a very informative and timely talk given the current rise is road fatalities this year. In the talk, students learned to be more responsible pedestrians, cyclists and passengers as well as learning pathways (excuse the pun!) to the safe driving of cars and agricultural vehicles. Louise engaged the students very well and answered all their questions comprehensively. Thank you to Ms. McTeirnan for organising this.

Ericsson Talk: The Career Guidance Department organised a team from Ericsson to facilitate a careers workshop for TYs and 5th Years. This focused on the area of software engineering. The team lead, Barbara, software engineer Oisin and software engineering student Lauren gave details about the career itself; a not-so-typical day in the life of a software engineer; the opportunities offered by Ericsson as well as some information on the various pathways into the career. Students also participated in some teamwork activities, which brought out their competitive side in the best possible way!

GAA

The Senior Girls team had two wins against Drumshanbo and Lough Allen and will be progressing to a game against Mohill after mid-term.

The Senior Boys team had a narrow defeat against Lough Allen College.

The mixed 1st and 2nd Year Boys team won both their games at a recent blitz hosted in the Leitrim Centre of Excellence.

Lunchtime Walking / Running Group

Mr. Washington’s Tuesday lunchtime walking / running group continues for both students and staff. Anyone free to join for a slow stroll or a fast run – it’s all good for you and gets you outside for a half hour.
