€1.1m for Leitrim in latest round of Town and Villages funding

Leitrim projects have received a total of €1.1m in funding under the 2021 Towns and Villages Scheme.
Speaking in Mohill this morning, Minister for Social Protection and Rural & Community Development, Heather Humphreys, confirmed the allocation across five projects:
- €500,000 has been allocated to the repurposing of the former narrow-gauge railway station house in Mohill. The project aims to create a multi-purpose facility that will be used by community, arts and heritage organisations. Part of the development includes the creation of much-needed self-catering accommodation in the town.
- €238,804 has been allocated to Carrick-on-Shannon. The three-phase project includes a marketing and promotion campaign for the town as well as works to enhance the arrival points to the town and the installation of two new murals.
- €250,000 has been allocated towards the redevelopment of the former garda station in Dromahair. Vacant since 2013 the property will become a much-needed community facility.
- €88,245 has been allocated towards the redevelopment of the former garda station in Keshcarrigan. It closed at the same time as the station in Dromahair and it is hoped to convert the property for community use.
- €25,118 has been allocated towards a two-phase project in Rossinver which includes the installation of a monument to honour Charles Meehan and the enhancement of a small outdoor amenity located in the centre of the village.
The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (25th Feb 2022) announced almost €18.5 million to benefit rural towns and villages the length and breadth of the country.
The funding is being provided under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme as part of Our Rural Future and places a strong emphasis on projects which tackle vacancy and dereliction by bringing landmark town centre buildings back to life.
Speaking in Mohill today, Minister Humphreys said: "I am delighted to announce this latest round of funding as part of Our Rural Future.
“Many of the successful projects I am announcing today will see vacant and derelict town centre building such as old banks, garda stations and convents transformed into community, cultural and arts spaces.
“There is also a strong focus on remote working projects in this round of funding and I am pleased to see that a number of counties have set out ambitious marketing plans aimed at attracting remote workers to relocate.
“These projects will breathe new life into our towns and villages and are real-life examples of the impact that Our Rural Future is having in communities across the country."
Full coverage of the announcement will be included in the next issue of the Leitrim Observer.
