Leitrim County Council has applied for funding to install safety barriers at Kilavoggy Bridge, while interim measures will be carried out as a matter of urgency.

Remedial works have been requested to be completed “as a matter of urgency” on a bridge in North Leitrim amid ongoing concern from local residents.

At a recent meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr Mary Bohan asked what progress had been made on improvement works at Kilavoggy Bridge in Dromahair.

A response from the Roads Department confirmed that Leitrim County Council has submitted an application to the Department of Transport for funding to install safety barriers at the bridge.

The funding scheme covers the installation, repair and replacement of barriers on regional and local roads between 2027 and 2029. If the application is successful, the works will be progressed.

In the meantime, road edge delineators will be installed to improve visibility, while hedge-cutting works will also be carried out.

“At the end of the day, it is a legacy road, it’s narrow and there will be a lot of issues,” said District Engineer Paul McMahon.

Cllr Bohan noted that the bridge remains a concern for people living in the area.

“Hopefully we’ll see that funding being successful. There’s no doubt these works are required and they’re needed,” said Cllr Pádraig Fallon.

Mr McMahon confirmed the interim remedial works have been identified as a priority.
