Michael McManus proposes solutions for affordable housing for all

Independent candidate advocates for housing solutions in Leitrim, not empty promises
Michael McManus, independent candidate in the Carrick-on-Shannon Local Electoral Area, said that The Vienna Housing Model (Austrian Model) is recognised for social housing excellence.
“The local councils own, co-own and manage 50% of the city’s residential housing. This was made possible through a variety of schemes that made low rents and rent supports available to thousands of households. This model has been in place since the 1920’s and has earned the capital the title of ‘Most Liveable City’,” he stated.
“Certain modifications would be required to apply the model to the Carrick-on-Shannon district area, it is certainly workable and would bring an end to homelessness, tackle the housing crisis, provide public housing, give a right to access housing.
“In addition, one such modification would be to re-examine the right to build one off housing on your own land.
“I have examined this model and it was up for discussion at the Leitrim Organic Farmers Co-op meeting. It was agreed that it was a suitable template with some modification to meet the needs of the people of the LEA. I intend to present this to the council should I be elected.
“The model itself will protect the people and protect the housing stock against a weighted private landlord system and restrict short term leases, reaching nationwide targets.
“This template then supports additional infrastructure and recognised the role of council in provision of amenities such as dog parks, facilities for teenagers and young families and activities for the older generation.
“This is critical in supporting our way of life in the west of Ireland which would allow our young people to remain in Ireland if they wish and for others to return."
Michael McManus claimed that these are the “heartfelt beliefs” of the electorate in this area that need to be acted upon by the Council and councillors immediately. He said we need solutions, not more empty promises.
Michael said that for many years he has supported and spoken up on behalf of local people on many issues with Leitrim County Council.
However, he believes if he is elected he can support and do a lot more.
