More resources requested to keep Drumshanbo clean

Two councillors have come together to seek additional resources and a set plan for the town of Drumshanbo to keep its streets tidy and clean and also to manage drainage and other services. Cllr Brendan Barry and Cllr Enda McGloin put forward similar motions calling for greater resources for Drumshanbo, with Cllr McGloin seeking to have an outdoor staff member placed in the town at least three days a week.
Cllr Brendan Barry said extra help is needed in the town after Bank Holidays and festival events.
Cllr McGloin agreed and added that the town recently had a flooding issue which “could have been prevented with the presence of an outdoor member of staff monitoring the storm drains.”
District Engineer Darragh O’Boyle said in Carrick-on-Shannon the businesses contribute funds and people are paid to do early morning cleans.
He said the flooding in Drumshanbo was “exceptional circumstances” which saw a build up of debris and rain over 10 days.
The Council said they “will endeavour to put a plan in place to cater for exceptional situations such as festivals and long weekends in Drumshanbo.
“The hiring of sweepers is expensive and we are limited to the amount of times we can use it in our towns and villages.”
They concluded by saying they will “look at our budgets in 2023 and will endeavour to cater for this request.”
