Age-related macular degeneration can develop without early symptoms. Advanced Eye Care Opticians Leitrim explains the importance of regular eye examinations, particularly for those with a family history or other risk factors.

Our eyesight is one of our most precious senses, yet many serious eye conditions develop silently without causing symptoms in their early stages. One of the most common is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), a condition that affects the macula – the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision needed for reading, driving and recognising faces. Early detection is vital because people may not notice any changes until the disease has already progressed.

Does Age-Related Macular Degeneration Run in Your Family?

If a parent, brother, sister or close relative has been diagnosed with macular degeneration, your own risk of developing the condition is higher. While a family history does not mean you will definitely develop AMD, it does mean regular eye examinations are especially important. Comprehensive eye examinations can detect the earliest signs of macular degeneration, often before your vision is affected, allowing appropriate monitoring and treatment where necessary.

Those at higher risk of ARMD include smokers, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and low macular pigment densities. Diabetics are also at a higher risk of developing AMD.

If you have macular degeneration, or are at increased risk, remember to:

Wear good quality sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors to reduce direct sunlight reaching your eyes.

Stay well hydrated, as dehydration can worsen dry eye symptoms.

Eat a healthy diet rich in leafy green vegetables, colourful fruit and oily fish to support retinal health.

Avoid smoking, as it is one of the biggest modifiable risk factors for macular degeneration.

Monitor your vision and seek urgent advice if straight lines suddenly appear bent or distorted, or if you notice a sudden blurred or dark patch in your central vision.
