Mamie (Mary) Duignan of Mohill, formerly of Arvagh, Cavan, has been remembered with affection as condolences paid tribute to her long life and kindness.

Tributes are being paid following the passing of a Leitrim woman who has been fondly remembered as “a really remarkable hard working woman, who was always dignified.”

Mamie (Mary) Duignan (née Shanaghy), of Cloone Road, Mohill, and formerly of Arvagh, Co Cavan, passed away peacefully at Cavan General Hospital in her 92nd year on Thursday, July 9.

Mamie was the beloved wife of the late Johnny and devoted mother of Philomena (Martin Caslin, Strokestown), Anne (John Conway, Ballinamore), Pauline (Michael McKiernan, Aughavas), Clare (Leo Doyle, Mohill and New York) and Joan (New York). She was sister-in-law to Bridie Duignan and a cherished grandmother to 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will also be sadly missed by her nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and neighbours.

Condolences shared on RIP.ie have reflected on a life well lived and recalled many happy memories.

“She was a wonderful woman who made a great impression on everyone she met. She was also full of goodness and kindness and I’m sure she will have a special place in her new home,” one condolence read.

“Mamie was a pure lady and she loved coming into the country market on Friday mornings and we loved to see her also. She was always so nice and friendly, a real genuine person,” said another.

“I have fantastic memories of my summers in Mohill up and down the road from Coolabawn to your home. Mamie and Johnny were always so welcoming. I often speak of these summers to my own children now,” another person shared.

Funeral mass for Mamie took place on Saturday, July 11, at St Patrick’s Church, Mohill, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Further tributes read: “A kind and caring person has left us but she has left us the richer for having known her. Her warm welcome and generous hospitality will be remembered.”

“She was always so cheerful with her beautiful welcoming smile and her pride in her five amazing daughters. Mohill has lost a unique Lady,” another shared.
